My husband and I moved to Clinton in 2003, just as the Walmart was going up. We bought a small-lot home behind Albertson’s Fresh Market Macey’s FatCats and started a family. A few years later we built a house less than a mile away. Now I’m Mom to four inimitable young people. Clinton is the defining city of my adult life. It’s home. It’s family.
Living in that first small-lot home, I met incredible people. I also had my first run-ins with the principles of land development. “Why on earth did they make these streets so narrow?” we wondered. “Where are the sidewalks, and why are the cars parked on the grass, or hanging off the curbs and gutters?”
“If I were in a position of power, I would never allow this,” I told my husband. Twenty years later, I told that story to the City Council members and developers in the room as we argued over potential townhome development standards.
I’ve been on the City Council for almost five years now, across two different mayors and city managers. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. I’ve put my whole heart into truly listening and learning from people. I’m running for mayor because we need processes that are executed with greater care and strategy; that give stronger voice to the public and the city’s department heads; and that promote civility. Ultimately, it’s about prioritizing people.
The recent referendum petition underscored the public’s frustration at not being heard. It exposed flaws in our processes that need correcting in order to build trust. It’s the mayor’s role to ensure effective process and communication. Those are my strong suits.
I graduated from Utah State University with a degree in both journalism and political science. Go Aggies! The journalist in me asks a million questions and studies issues from every angle. It’s in my blood to report to the people in depth what’s happening in Clinton and get their feedback. (Check out my track record of detailed communication on Facebook.) The political science major in me is driven to analyze decisions and processes through the lens of the proper role of government, with an eye toward principles of constitution and law.
